Pharmaceutical Labels

Precision pharmaceutical labels produced to your specification

Pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturers need labels that are accurate, durable, legible and produced to a consistent standard. At Kingfisher Labels, we produce pharmaceutical labels for UK manufacturers from our ISO 9001 accredited factory in Yate, Bristol, covering everything from prescription product packaging and clinical trial labels through to veterinary and OTC products.

We have been manufacturing self-adhesive labels since 1996 and understand the demands this sector places on print quality, material performance and variable data accuracy. Regulatory compliance is your responsibility, our job is to produce labels that give you the precision and consistency to support it.

As UK label manufacturers with over 30 years' experience, we understand the compliance pressures pharmaceutical brands face, and build every label around patient safety and regulatory accuracy.

Pharmaceutical Labels

What makes a great pharmaceutical label?

Effective pharmaceutical labels need to:

  • Clear, legible print at small sizes, with accurate colour reproduction
  • Durable adhesion throughout manufacture, storage, distribution and dispensing
  • Accurate variable data: batch numbers, lot codes, expiry dates and sequential numbering
  • Tamper-evident construction where required by your specification
  • Barcode and QR code printing that scans reliably at point of use
  • Material and adhesive combinations suited to glass, plastic, foil and blister packaging

We understand these challenges, and we’re here to help you create pharmaceutical labels that tick all the boxes.

Batch numbers, lot codes and serialisation are handled through Variable Data Labels, printed inline so every label carries its own unique data without a second pass. Where a label needs to survive handling, cleaning or cold storage we specify Polypropylene Labels rather than a paper stock.

When the required text will not fit on the container, Peel and Reveal Labels add hidden layers for multilingual instructions, dosing information and regulatory text while keeping the front of pack clean. Added protection comes from Laminated Labels.

Trialling a new product before a full run? Prototyping & Sample Labels let you test the construction first, and our quality assurance process covers every job.

What Kingfisher Labels produces for the pharmaceutical sector

Variable data printing for batch and lot traceability

Pharmaceutical packaging often requires unique information on every label: batch numbers, lot codes, expiry dates, sequential serial numbers and 2D barcodes. Our Variable Data Labels capability means each label in a run can carry different data, printed at production speed with consistent quality. This supports your internal traceability processes and any supply chain requirements your customers or distributors require.

Tamper-evident label options

We can produce pharmaceutical labels with tamper-evident features, including void constructions that leave a visible pattern on the substrate if the label is removed, and destructible films that break apart on attempted removal. These are specified to your packaging type and application method. Confirm your exact requirements at briefing and we will recommend an appropriate construction.

Polypropylene and durable film materials

Pharmaceutical labels need to stay intact and legible through handling, storage and dispensing. Polypropylene labels are a popular choice for this sector: they resist moisture, solvents and temperature variation, adhere reliably to glass and plastic containers, and maintain print quality throughout the product lifecycle. We will advise on the right film weight and adhesive combination for your specific container and environment.

Accurate barcode and small-text printing

Pharmaceutical labels frequently carry multiple barcodes, GS1 DataMatrix codes and dense small-point text within a limited label area. Our digital and flexographic presses produce sharp, scannable barcodes and legible text down to small sizes. Print quality is checked against your specification before any job leaves our factory.

Types of pharmaceutical labels

Peel and Reveal pharmaceutical labels

Where label area is limited, Peel and Reveal Labels allow additional information, dosage instructions, multilingual text, patient information leaflet content -- to be carried on the reverse layer of the label itself. This is a practical solution for small containers where a separate leaflet would add packaging complexity.

Over‑the‑counter (OTC) labels

OTC labels are used on medications that can be purchased without a prescription, such as pain relievers, cough syrups and allergy remedies. They must comply with strict regulations on active ingredients, warnings, contraindications, and usage instructions, and be designed to attract attention on crowded pharmacy shelves.

Clinical trial labels

Clinical trial labels identify investigational drugs and track patients in clinical studies. They often require variable data such as patient codes, study numbers and expiry dates, and must be designed to maintain patient confidentiality and data integrity.

Medical device labels

Medical device labels are used to identify medical equipment, instruments and implants. They must be durable, legible, and resistant to sterilisation processes, and comply with regulations on device identification, safety warnings, and usage instructions.

Veterinary pharmaceutical labels

Veterinary pharmaceutical labels are used on animal medications and must comply with regulations governing animal health and safety. They often require specific dosage instructions, withdrawal periods and species‑specific warnings.

Cost‑effective pharmaceutical label solutions

We understand that cost is a key consideration, especially for generic medications and high‑volume products. We offer a range of cost‑effective pharmaceutical label solutions that don’t compromise on quality or compliance. Options include:

  • Value‑engineered material and finish combinations
  • Efficient digital printing for short to medium runs
  • Strategic use of variable data to reduce waste and improve traceability

We’ll work with you to find the most affordable and effective way to meet your labelling needs.

Long Run Label Printing

Our label printing capability for pharmaceutical manufacturers

Digital and flexographic printing

We run both digital and flexographic presses at our Bristol factory, which means we can match the right print method to your run length and budget. Digital printing is well suited to clinical trial labels, short-run products and anything requiring variable data. Flexographic printing comes into its own on higher-volume products where unit cost is a priority. Many pharmaceutical customers use both across their product range.

Material options for pharmaceutical applications

We work with a range of materials suited to pharmaceutical packaging, including white and clear polypropylene films, paper stocks for carton and outer packaging, and tamper-evident constructions. Adhesive selection is matched to your container material; glass, PET, HDPE or foil, and your storage and distribution conditions. We do not supply adhesives for direct contact with medications; labels for this application are applied to the outer container only.

ISO 9001 accredited quality management

Every job produced at Kingfisher Labels is subject to our ISO 9001 accredited quality management system. Print quality, colour consistency, registration and barcode readability are checked against your specification before dispatch. If you have specific quality documentation requirements, discuss these at the briefing stage.

Short runs and prototyping

If you are developing a new pharmaceutical product or updating existing label artwork, our Prototyping and Sample Labels service lets you approve a physical sample before committing to full production. This is particularly useful where label performance on a specific container needs to be confirmed before sign-off.

Digital Label Printing

Pharmaceutical Labels: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you print batch numbers, expiry dates and serial numbers?

Yes. Our variable data printing runs inline, so every label in a run can carry its own batch number, lot code, expiry date, sequential serial number or 2D barcode without a second pass.

Do you offer tamper-evident pharmaceutical labels?

Yes. We can produce void constructions that leave a visible pattern on the substrate if the label is removed, and destructible films that break apart on attempted removal. Both are specified to your packaging type and application method.

Which materials suit glass, plastic, foil and blister packaging?

We match material and adhesive to the container. Where a label has to survive handling, cleaning or cold storage we specify polypropylene rather than a paper stock, and laminated labels add a further layer of protection.

What if there is not enough room for all the required text?

Peel and reveal labels add hidden layers for multilingual instructions, dosing information and regulatory text, while keeping the front of pack clean.

Do you handle regulatory compliance for us?

No. Regulatory compliance remains your responsibility. Our job is to produce labels with the print quality, material performance and variable data accuracy to support it.

Can we test a construction before committing to a full run?

Yes. Prototyping and sample labels let you trial the material, adhesive and finish before you commit to a production run.

The pharmaceutical label printing process

Project consultation and specification

We start by understanding your product, packaging, regulatory requirements and target market. From there, we’ll recommend suitable materials, adhesives, printing methods and finishes to meet your specific needs.

Artwork preparation and proofing

You can supply press‑ready artwork, or our in‑house team can help you create or refine your designs. We’ll check your files for legibility, barcode accuracy, font sizes and compliance with labelling regulations, and provide a digital proof – and physical samples where required – before we go to print.

Printing and finishing

Once approved, we print your labels using our state‑of‑the‑art presses, then apply any selected varnishes, laminates or tamper‑evident features. Labels are then die‑cut, stripped and wound to your preferred roll size or sheet format, ready for manual or automated application.

Quality control and delivery

Every batch of labels is checked for print quality, colour consistency, registration, adhesion, tamper‑evidence and barcode accuracy before it leaves our factory. We then carefully pack and ship your labels so they arrive on time and in perfect condition.
